In excess of twenty Olympic medal winners, trainers and further international athletes have signed a statement urging a halt to the death penalty of a boxing titleholder and instructor, who is on death row in Iran.

Escalating Global Anger

Amid rising global condemnation over Iran’s increasing application of executions as a tool of oppression, the strongly worded statement condemns the Iranian regime's decision to confirm the execution order of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

The athlete, three decades old, from the city in the northern province, was detained for participating in national uprisings in two thousand nineteen and indicted of supporting an dissident organization. He has passed five years in incarceration, where he has been abused and confined in solitary confinement.

“Competition is designed to inspire optimism, solidarity, and fortitude,” the supporters wrote. “The execution of a winner for his beliefs is a blatant attack on these ideals and a admonition to all sportspeople who attempts to voice opinions.

History of Putting to Death Sports Figures

The statement noted that the boxer's circumstances was not unique and underscored the country's history of putting to death athletes for their views, such as a football captain, captain of the national football team, and a women's sports leader, skipper of the national women’s volleyball team. In 2020, an athlete, a 27-year-old Iranian competitor, was also executed.

Additional signatories to the appeal comprise a sailing champion, who led the first women's squad in a round-the-world competition and was the pioneering lady to receive a prestigious yachting trophy; the former leader of the Australian football team Craig Foster; and Bahram Mavaddat, who was in the national team for the global tournament.

Detention and Unjust Proceedings

The athlete was detained in early 2020. The charges against him comprised “spreading corruption on Earth through fire-setting and ruin of state assets”. His verdict has been annulled twice but on the fourth of October it was upheld on the latest review. His trial was denounced as “grossly unfair” by rights defenders and bodies.

Call to International Body

The urging to halt Vafaei Sani’s death sentence follows a 2023 letter to the United Nations official for freedoms, signed by in excess of one hundred human rights experts and organizations, demanding action to stop the sports figure's death.

Execution Crisis

According to data, there is an “death penalty surge in Iran, which has achieved horrific proportions”. In 2023, authorities executed at least eight hundred fifty-three people – a nearly half rise on the previous year. The year before, data showed nine hundred seventy-two deaths, representing the highest number since 2015. More than eight hundred people have been put to death so far in the current year.

Activists and dissidents are targets, notably in the wake of the the year 2022 uprising. Experts say the government have utilized the capital punishment to stifle protest, instil fear among the public and reinforce their hold on rule.
